Supporting Your Local Economy

Friday, July 9th, 2010

We all know what it’s like to worry about money, whether personally or professionally (or both). This means (if we’re smart) we pay attention to where it goes — that is, we try to budget and monitor spending.

But how many of us actually stop to think about where our dollar goes after it has left our pocket?

According to a 2008 Civic Economics Study (conducted in Western Michigan), $68 out of $100 spent at a locally owned business remains in the local economy.  That same $100 spent at a non-locally owned business (such as a national chain) leaves just $43 in the local economy. And you better believe that a whopping $0.00 of $100 spent online keeps pumping through your local economy. (Click on the image below for a breakdown of what this typically looks like)

Why does this difference matter? Or, put another way, why is it so important to keep our money here in Michigan? (You guessed it, I’m going to tell you…)

When you buy locally….

  • Local businesses have money to invest in local growth, local business services and jobs
  • Local employees have income to spend locally (groceries, etc), to support community causes, to pay taxes that keep local services going (this includes our schools!)

Our tax dollars to Washington and Lansing are not getting back to us the way they used to. We need to take care of our communities and work together to make Michigan’s economy strong again.

With this in mind, please consider Michigan-based distributors (like us) for the purchases you make professionally.  We have local inventory and expertise in the industries we serve.  And yes, we’re also sensitive to cost issues; in fact, we believe you’ll find our pricing to be better than what you may be seeing from out-of-state companies. Look no further than Galloup (a Michigan-owned distributor since 1886) for Pipe, Valves, Instrumentation and more!
